Bentley axes 300 jobs (UK)

Bentley is axing the nightshift on the Continental production line in Crewe, making up to 300 workers redundant as the luxury car maker faces up to falling sales.

The famous Cheshire factory had been running a 3 day week on three shifts, but will now be running a four-day week with two shifts. Some workers will be absorbed into the new shift pattern, but the company is looking for voluntary redundancies and will be laying off up to 300 people.

Crewe is the first British car factory that’s been forced to lay off a significant number of workers since the recent dramatic drop in new car sales – but it is unlikely to be the last.
